A few days had passed, with no word from Henderson. Despite the radio silence, I took it as a positive and thought that Henderson was in the process of getting to the bottom of Melissa’s kidnapping. I figured I’d have been dead by then or arrested if he’d decided to renege on our agreement. Fletcher could tell something was off with me, but I put my erratic behaviour down to the stress I was feeling over my mum.

As for my mum, the news of her kidnapping had gotten out to the media, and Sam was inconsolable. Dunnel was also at a loss and didn’t know what our next move should be to find her.

I felt like I had it all under control, but at a great cost. Even though my days of freedom (if you could call how I was living as being free) looked like they were numbered, I was still deeply interested in finding out more about what the Kraken told me about my dad. I’d planned to keep trying to investigate it from prison, as difficult a prospect as that was.

I was on my way in the car with Fletcher to another new crime scene. This time, it was a murdered female found in an alleyway in the red-light district.

“I hate to say it, but it’s looking like we’ve got a serial killer on our hands,” Fletcher noted.

“It does. We’ve got a profiler coming in from Edinburgh to help find him. There’s quite a bit of CCTV down that way too, so it shouldn’t be that difficult. I just hope we catch him before he strikes again.

We arrived at the crime scene and parked on the street next to the pavement. The alleyway was a few feet away from us. We got out of our car and walked down it. SOCO Lindsey Adams was talking with a few officers. The poor victim was lying on the cold, wet ground next to a large metal rubbish bin. The bin was overflowing, and there was a rubbish bag next to her that had a tear in it. I wondered if rats had been inspecting her body throughout the night.

“Good morning, you two,” said Adams.

“Morning,” said Fletcher. I wasn’t feeling cheery enough for a morning greeting, so instead, I offered a grunt.

“What a horrible way to go,” said Fletcher, “to end your life in a dirty old alleyway next to rubbish.”

Adams looked at the body. “It’s a sin.”

The murder victim had dressed similarly to how Annabelle Morozov was when we found her at the harbour. She had bruises on her neck and a stab wound in her chest.

“I’ll give you the rundown, then,” Adams explained. “The victim was stabbed once through the heart, but before that, her attacker was strangling her. It looks like she put up a fight. There’s someone else’s skin underneath her nails. We’ll get that tested. My bet is it’ll be a match with the semen we found at the harbour crime scene. With this location
